A delegation of the Socialist International held talks in Beijing with the leadership of the CPC from 14 to 19 February.
SI President António Guterres ; Massimo D’Alema, a Vice-President of the SI ; Adrian Nastase, Leader of the PSD and Prime Minister of Romania ; Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Chair of the Global Progressive Forum ; Luis Ayala, Secretary General of the Socialist International ; Senator Peter Cook of the Australian Labor Party and Marco Aurelio García from the Workers’ Party of Brazil formed the delegation.
Meetings were held with, Hu Juntao, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of the People’s Republic of China ; Hung Ju, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee and Deputy Premier of the State Council ; Tang Jiaxuang, State Councillor ; Wang Jiarui, Minister, and Zhang Zhijun, Vice-Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee ; academics and students from Beijing University ; the Directors of the Central Party School , and leading members of the Development Research Centre of the State Council, among others.
The exchanges centred on issues of Global Governance such as reform of the UN and international financial institutions, management of trade, the environment and social concerns; the current world situation and developments within China; future areas of cooperation and how to approach questions related to democracy, human rights and labour standards. These talks took place within the context of the Socialist International’s discussions held in recent time on globalisation and international governance with social movements and other major political parties.
