Socialist International Balkan Leaders' Meeting, Tirana

A meeting of leaders from the Socialist International's member parties in the Balkans was held in Tirana, Albania, on 5 September 2003.

The discussions, hosted by the Socialist Party of Albania and the Social Democratic Party PSD, focused on stabilisation and regional cooperation, Balkans-EU relations and the role and tasks of the social democratic movement in the region as the main themes of the meeting.

Participants from the hosts included the Prime Minister of Albania and leader of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, and the Chair of the PSD, Skender Gjinushi; and from the International, the President, António Guterres; the Secretary General, Luis Ayala; the Co-Chair of the SI Committee for Central and Eastern Europe, Piero Fassino (DS, Italy), and leaders and delegates from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro; Macedonia; Bulgaria; Romania, as well as participants from SI member parties from France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Sweden.

The meeting issued a statement reflecting the outcome of its discussions.
