The Socialist International Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean, meeting in Montevideo, Uruguay, on 3-4 April 2006, was informed of the electoral process underway in Mexico and which will be concluded on 2 July 2006, with the election of the President of the Republic and all the seats in the Chamber of Deputies and in the Senate of the Republic, as well as the Head of the Government of the Federal District and various other State Governors.

The Committee takes note that the two Mexican member parties of the Socialist International have presented presidential candidates and that the government of Vicente Fox and his party have been leading a dirty tricks campaign.

The Committee views these manoeuvres with concern and will carefully observe the Mexican electoral process so that the popular will is respected, and at the same time calls for these discrediting campaigns to be stopped.

The Socialist International Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean agrees to send an observer mission of the Socialist International to the Mexican elections, to be present before and during the 2 July polls.
