Resolution on Cyprus

XXVI Congress of the Socialist International, Madrid

25-27 November 2022

Socialist International expresses support and encouragement to the struggle for a federal settlement of the longstanding Cyprus conflict, and condemns all attempts of imperial powers to further militarisation and escalation of tension on the island.

Furthermore, Socialist International calls on both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders to resume formal negotiations under the auspices of the UN within a sense of urgency. Negotiations must be result oriented, time framed and aimed at a bizonal and bicommunal federation with political equality of the two respective communities, in full line with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and parameters.

We express our profound concern that the peace talks in Cyprus remain in impasse since 2017, and hope that the island of Cyprus will soon become an example of peaceful coexistence, cooperation and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean.
