Statement of the Socialist International on the dramatic situation in Sudan
3 November 2025
The Socialist International expresses its deep concern and strong indignation at the human tragedy currently unfolding in Sudan, where clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces continue to spread death, destruction, and despair.
Since the beginning of the conflict, thousands of civilians have lost their lives, while millions more have been displaced within the country or forced to seek refuge in neighbouring states. Vital infrastructure — hospitals, schools, water and electricity networks — has been devastated, plunging the population into an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
The Socialist International firmly condemns all violations of international humanitarian law and human rights, including sexual violence, targeted attacks on civilians, and the obstruction of humanitarian aid. It expresses in particular its solidarity with women and children, direct and invisible victims of this war, and pays tribute to the courage of Sudanese women who continue to play a decisive role in civil resistance and the pursuit of peace.
In the face of this tragedy, the Socialist International:
- Demands an immediate and lasting ceasefire, paving the way for an inclusive political dialogue placing the Sudanese people at the centre of the peace process;
- Calls for the urgent protection of civilians and strict respect for international humanitarian law by all parties to the conflict;
- Requests the free movement of humanitarian aid and the removal of all obstacles preventing relief from reaching those in need;
- Encourages the international community, particularly the African Union, the United Nations, and regional partners, to redouble efforts to facilitate impartial and credible mediation;
- Emphasises the full, equal, and effective participation of women in negotiations and reconstruction, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.
The Socialist International reaffirms its unwavering solidarity with the Sudanese people and their democratic, progressive, and social forces, who aspire to a future based on peace, freedom, justice, and democracy.
Finally, it calls on the international community not to turn away from the Sudanese tragedy, and to intensify collective efforts to end this conflict, in full respect of the legitimate aspirations of the Sudanese people for a future of peace and dignity.
