Statement on the release of Nikolai Statkevich

23 February 2026

The Socialist International welcomes the release of Nikolai Statkevich, a prominent leader of the Belarusian democratic opposition, a committed human rights defender, and the leader of our member party, the Narodnaya Hramada.

This release, which comes amid grave concerns for his life following a stroke, serves as a stark reminder of the severe conditions faced by political prisoners in Belarus.

His imprisonment had come to symbolise the persistent repression of democratic forces in Belarus. His release therefore represents a sign of hope for all those who continue to struggle peacefully for freedom, justice, and the rule of law.

As the Socialist International has consistently done during previous campaigns to secure his release, we have stood firmly by Mikola Statkevich, his family, and our member party, Narodnaya Hramada, and we will continue to do so.

While the release of Nikolai Statkevich is a positive development, many other political prisoners remain unjustly detained. We will continue to call for their immediate and unconditional release.
