Memoriam: Passing of Lionel Jospin
23 March 2026
The Socialist International deeply mourns the passing of its Honorary President, f. French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin.
Lionel Jospin served as First Secretary of the PS during Francois Mitterrand, Minister of Education, Prime Minister, and member of the Constitutional Court, and throughout his political trajectory he was renowned for his integrity and dedication to progressive values.
We will always remember his speech at the historic 1999 SI Congress in Paris, so relevant today.
He said, “Socialism is a set of values, a vision of History, a culture. To be a socialist is thinking and acting on a global scale. To be a socialist means to be internationalist”.
As Socialist International, we will always remember the legacy of Lionel Jospin and will try to continue working for our shared ideas in the new era.
