Statement on the expiration of the New START agreement

9 February 2026

The expiration of the New START agreement, which limited U.S. and Russian deployed strategic nuclear arsenals, is dangerous for the world, as it could lead to a renewed nuclear arms race.

The next Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty — adopted in 1968 and indefinitely extended in 1995 — which will take place in a few months in New York, is an important opportunity for urgent action on disarmament.

At a time of global instability, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is the only globally applicable treaty in force that bans nuclear weapons activities, from use and testing to development. The Socialist International actively supports the full implementation of this treaty, as well as all additional measures that encourage disarmament.
