Declaration by the Socialist International on Uruguay

Resolution of the Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Socialist International on Support for the Frente Amplio of Uruguay in the 2024 General Elections

The Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Socialist International,
Recognizing the importance of general elections as a fundamental expression of democratic rights and the sovereign will of the people,
Recalling the principles established in the Charter of the Socialist International, particularly the promotion of social justice, equality, and democracy as essential values for governance,
Highlighting the historic commitment of Uruguay’s Frente Amplio to consolidating an inclusive democracy and social well-being for all sectors of society,
Emphasizing the importance of the close ties between the Socialist International and its member parties in Uruguay, especially the Nuevo Espacio party, led by comrade Rafael Michelini,

1. Expresses its full support for its sister party Nuevo Espacio and the political coalition of which it is a part, Frente Amplio, in the general elections to be held on October 27, 2024, as well as its presidential candidate, Yamandú Orsi, whose platform reflects the fundamental values of progress, equality, and social justice;
2. Reaffirms its support for the congressional candidacy of comrade Rafael Michelini, president of the Nuevo Espacio party and vice president of the Socialist International globally, recognizing his commitment to social democratic ideals and his outstanding career in national and international politics;
3. Trusts that the election of Frente Amplio will contribute to the strengthening of progressive governments in the region, consolidating a model of governance oriented toward social well-being, shared prosperity, and the promotion of human rights;
4. Calls for cooperation among future progressive governments in the region to work together to promote equality, inclusion, and social justice, contributing to sustainable development and the well-being of their societies;
5. Declares that the Committee of the Socialist International for Latin America and the Caribbean will continue to provide support to all political forces that promote democracy, peace, and justice in the region, in line with the organization’s core values.
