Declaration of the Socialist International on the situation in Mali

21 June 2024

The Socialist International is closely monitoring the political situation in Mali and is concerned about the restriction of public freedoms imposed by the transitional authorities in place despite the commitments made to the Malian people and the international community.

In June 2022, the junta led by Colonel Assimi Goita had decreed that the military would cede power to civilians in March 2024, following a presidential election scheduled for February of the same year.

The Socialist International notes with disappointment and concern that the election has been postponed to an unknown date. This unjustified extension of the transition and the persecution of political figures who are demanding a return to democratic order creates instability that risks having serious consequences.
We demand that the authorities in power in Mali follow the example of successful transitions on the African continent for the benefit of all the country's citizens.
We demand the release of political leaders arrested during the meeting on June 20, 2024, in Bamako, including our comrades from the African Party for Solidarity and Justice (ADEMA/P.A.S.J) and the Rally for Mali (RPM).

We call for the support of the international community to respect the democratic transition processes in the region. Today more than ever, we need solidarity and hope among progressive forces.
