SI condemns attacks on democracy in Ecuador

30 September 2010

The attacks on the constitutional and democratic institutions of Ecuador and on its President Rafael Correa by members of the police force and other elements in Quito, are completely unacceptable. The international community and the countries of the region, who firmly embrace democracy, today raise their voice to denounce these violent incidents.

The Socialist International, which brings together parties and movements which have strived for and are at the forefront of the advancement and consolidation of rights and freedoms everywhere, condemns these events unequivocally. No nation and no people can or would tolerate anything less than the democratic order we have gained together and which we will continue to defend.
