Socialist International calls for immediate ceasefire in South Ossetia

9 August 2009

The Socialist International expresses its deepest concern at the outbreak of hostilities in South Ossetia and calls for an urgent ceasefire, respect for the civilian population affected by the conflict and respect for international and humanitarian law.

The International urges all parties involved to undertake dialogue and to avoid an expansion of the conflict and its escalation into a full scale war.

The Socialist International fully supports the efforts of the United Nations Security Council to reach common ground for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and also calls upon regional bodies, such as the OSCE and the European Union, to contribute towards a negotiated solution.
