Socialist International condemns unlawful assault on the government of Fiji

21 May 2000

The Socialist International strongly condemns the unlawful assault on the government of Fiji, the taking of hostages and the illegal holding of the Prime Minister and members of the cabinet in Parliament Buildings by armed men.

The International, expressing its full support for the legitimate government of Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, Secretary General of the Fiji Labour Party, a member party of the International, calls for the immediate release of all hostages and the full respect of the constitution and the rule of law.

In the face of this grave violation of democratic principles and governance, the international community today has the common and urgent responsibility to take all necessary measures to contribute to preserving democratic rights and institutions in Fiji.
