Socialist International expresses condolences following tragedy in Baghdad and reaffirms its solidarity with the people of Iraq

 

The Socialist International expresses its heartfelt condolences to President Jalal Talabani and the people of Iraq following the dreadful tragedy that took so many lives during the religious procession in Baghdad yesterday. Our deepest sympathies lie with the people of Iraq in their time of grief.

The International also reaffirms its solidarity with Iraq in its struggle to defeat terror and it stands together with all those who have had to live in the climate of violence and fear in which such tragedies can occur.

The Socialist International, at this very difficult moment in the country’s history, fully supports all the efforts of the Iraqi people to build democracy, strengthen its institutions and adopt a new constitution to ensure their sovereignty and a peaceful and democratic future.
