Socialist International expresses outrage and condemnation of bombings against Kurdish political parties in northern Iraq

2 February 2004

The Socialist International is outraged by and strongly condemns the bombings carried out yesterday against the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, PUK, a member of the International, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party, KDP, at their respective party headquarters in the city of Arbil in northern Iraq.

These atrocious and criminal acts, which took the lives of dozens of people and killed senior members of both political parties, were attacks not only on the Kurdish people but against all those engaged in the effort to build democracy and guarantee freedom and security throughout Iraq.

The Socialist International reiterates its rejection of all acts of terror, underlines its commitment to continue its work for a peaceful and stable Iraq based on democracy and respect for human rights, and reaffirms its solidarity with the SI member PUK, the KDP, and the people of Iraq and all their political forces striving to achieve that goal.
