Socialist International heartened by news of ETA ceasefire in Spain

The news of a ceasefire by ETA was received by the Socialist International with a great sense of satisfaction and with the hope that all the people of Spain will now be able to look forward to an end to the violence and suffering which has brought such pain to so many for close to forty years.

The Socialist International, its President George A. Papandreou, and all its leaders and member parties, stand firm alongside the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, PSOE, an SI member party, and its General Secretary, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Prime Minister of Spain, to whom we convey our full support and solidarity in all his efforts for peace.
