Socialist International Statement on the events in Guatemala

The Socialist International expresses its support for the newly elected President of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, on this crucial day as he takes office as the country's president.
We want to make clear our opposition to any attempt to question the electoral results. Democratic values and procedures, as well as the electoral outcome, must be respected.
We join numerous calls from the international community to defend and support democracy in Guatemala.
Our sincere support goes out to the Guatemalan citizens who have voted for change.
