Statement by the Socialist International on the Detention of SI Vice President from Kyrgyzstan Temirlan Sultanbekov

14 November 2024

The Socialist International is deeply concerned regarding the recent detention of Mr Temirlan Sultanbekov, our youngest Vice-President and a committed advocate for democracy in Kyrgyzstan.

We were informed that Mr Sultanbekov was  detained at the Social Democrats’ headquarters, denied legal representation, and pressured to withdraw his candidacy to the upcoming elections . Following his refusal, he was re-arrested, denied his rights under Kyrgyz electoral law, and held without access to legal counsel—actions that contradict the democratic principles  that define free and fair elections .

This incident  is increasing our concerns regarding the treatment of political opposition and civil liberties in Kyrgyzstan,

The Socialist International urges the Kyrgyz authorities to respect their legal obligations and uphold fair treatment for all candidates.

We call upon the international community, including the European Parliament, the OSCE, and others, to support the release of Mr Sultanbekov and the protection of democratic rights in Kyrgyzstan. We stand in solidarity with those defending democracy, justice, and the rights of the Kyrgyz people.
