Statement by the Socialist International on the situation in Kyrgyzstan
28 September 2025
Statement by the Socialist International on the situation in KyrgyzstaTaking into account that the trial of the Social Democrats in the election case will continue in Bishkek on September 30 and emphasising that the international community is closely monitoring this trial , the Socialist International reiterates that it is unlawful to designate the case as classified and conduct the trial behind closed doors. We expect justice to prevail and acquittal on politically motivated charges.
It is deeply concerning that, on the eve of early elections, the Kyrgyz authorities have launched confiscations and systematic pressure on the Social Democrats party, using the Koy-Tash case as a tool for repression against the party's political council and civilians. A week ago, the freezing of the Social Democrats' bank accounts, the bank cards of party leaders and management, and the sealing and denial of access to office premises, computers, equipment, documents, furniture, and other party property make it impossible for the party to participate in the upcoming snap elections . Therefore, we call on the authorities to guarantee free and fair elections and let the opposition participate as defined by the law in the electoral process.
The situation involving Irina Karamushkina is particularly alarming. Despite a suspected minor stroke, she is being denied full medical treatment. We also note that Irina Karamushkina has been among the top three candidates in the Sverdlovsk district in all elections, and has always led among female candidates. Her current arrest makes it impossible for her to participate in the elections.
Also under arrest are Social Democrats Farid Niyazov, who headed the party's campaign headquarters three times and led it to victory; Alga Kylychev, chairman of the party's observation mission; Ravshan Jeyenbekov, who was among the leaders in the last elections in the Leninsky district; and others. These arrests prevent the Social Democratic Party from participating in the elections, or even observing them.
The Socialist International calls on the Kyrgyz authorities to immediately cease pressure on the opposition leaders of the Social Democratic Party and guarantee respect for fundamental rights and democratic standards. Kyrgyzstan's international reputation depends on upholding justice, human dignity, and the rule of law especially during elections.
