Statement by the Socialist International on the Situation on the situation in Lebanon
19 October 2024
The Socialist International expresses its strong support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), recognising its crucial role in maintaining international peace and security. We emphasise the importance of strengthening the United Nations’ (UN) presence in areas of conflict to uphold stability, sovereignty, and human rights. UNIFIL’s deployment remains essential in promoting these principles, particularly during this period of heightened tensions.
We unequivocally condemn the recent attacks on UN peacekeepers and the escalation involving Hezbollah’s rocket fire into Israel. Such actions are in direct violation of Security Council Resolution 1701, and they further jeopardise peace efforts and threaten regional stability. Any attacks on civilians and UN personnel are unacceptable, and we reaffirm our commitment to the protection of human life and human rights as paramount priorities.
Furthermore, we call for the immediate and complete disarmament of all militias operating within Lebanon, including Hezbollah. This is necessary to restore the authority of the Lebanese state and to secure long-term stability. Armed non-state actors continue to pose significant threats to peace, and their disarmament is essential for the sovereignty and security of Lebanon.
We also stress the importance of bolstering democratic institutions within Lebanon, as they are vital for sustainable peace and self-governance. Lebanon’s sovereignty must be respected, free from foreign interference, to enable its people to build a peaceful and prosperous future. We urge all parties to agree to an immediate ceasefire and to work towards resolving the longstanding conflicts that have contributed to decades of instability, aiming for a comprehensive and peaceful solution in the Middle East.
The Socialist International calls on all nations to engage in diplomatic efforts that uphold Lebanon’s sovereignty and reinforce UN principles. Only through unified and sustained international cooperation can we achieve enduring peace and stability in the region.
