Statement by the Socialist International on the Situation on the situation Venezuela

11 September 2024

More than two months after the presidential elections in Venezuela, the situation remains extremely alarming. So far, no accurate official documents have been presented by the authorities to substantiate their claimed victory in the elections that took place on July 28 in Venezuela. Meanwhile, inflammatory rhetoric and arbitrary arrests have become a daily reality.

It is a great tragedy when an opposition leader is forced to leave their country to avoid unjust persecution. However, under the current circumstances, we can only warmly congratulate the Spanish government for taking the initiative to provide a safe refuge for Edmundo Gonzales, who sought for asylum in Spain.

As the Socialist International, we are deeply saddened that the hope for an inclusive, democratic Venezuela is once again being sacrificed by those who invest in polarization and intimidation.

We reiterate our call to the authorities to release the voting records certifying the outcome of the presidential elections and express our full solidarity with the Venezuelan people.

We call for dialogue, democracy, and the respect for the will of Venezuelan citizens.

We demand an end to arbitrary detentions and the restoration of freedom of assembly.
