Statement from the Socialist International on the Presidential Elections in Venezuela on July 28

The Socialist International expresses its deep concern over the current situation in Venezuela. We commend the determination of the Venezuelan people, who turned out to vote in large numbers and peacefully.

the will of the Venezuelan people. This verification must include the complete recount of all ballots, which should be provided without any further delay by the National Electoral Council of Venezuela.

It is imperative to avoid any form or violence. We urge the security forces to ensure full respect for human rights, including the right to peaceful assembly.

We strongly condemn the expulsion of the ambassador of Chile as well as of the ambassadors of Uruguay, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama and Argentina, which mentioned the need for a fair and democratic process. These actions undermine diplomatic efforts and international observation, which are crucial factors for the transparency and legitimacy of the electoral process.
