Statement of the Socialist International Condemning the Attempted Coup in Niger

The Socialist International unequivocally condemns the attempted coup against the democratic elected President of the Republic of Niger. Such attempts to undermine democracy are deeply concerning and have no place in a country that has become exemplary for its democratic development in the West African sub-region and striving for peace, stability, and progress.

We express our solidarity with the people of Niger and our member party the PNDS-Tarayya during this challenging time, as they uphold their democratic values and stand firmly against any actions that threaten democracy and stability of Niger.

The Socialist International is following the developments with great interest and urges the international community to engage stakeholders in Niger in upholding the country’s democratic principles of governance.
