Statement of the Socialist International on Peru
13 January 2023
The Socialist International (SI) wishes to express its dismay at the violence in Peru following the situation created by the failed self-coup of former President Pedro Castillo and the proclamation of a new government.
We deeply regret the death of at least 46 people, as well as the hundreds of people injured in the social protests taking place in the country.
We express our particular concern about the situation in the southern regions where the most violent events have taken place.
We call for an end to violence, proportionality in actions and respect for human rights.
We also call for the creation of spaces for dialogue that contribute to dialogue and coexistence in the country.
In Solidarity; For Progress.
