Statement of the Socialist International on the lifting of the suspension of the activities of political parties and the activities of political associations in Mali

The Socialist International welcomes the decision of the Malian government to lift the suspension of political party activities as well as those of political associations.

This measure marks an important step towards the restoration of democratic rights and freedoms in the service of peace and national reconciliation.

However, we insistently remind that this progress cannot be considered complete without the immediate and unconditional release of all imprisoned political leaders. Their detention constitutes an obstacle to freedom of expression and political participation, essential pillars of any healthy and inclusive democracy to ensure a climate of genuine and lasting peace and reconciliation.

We call on the Malian authorities to show justice by releasing these political leaders, as their freedom is a fundamental human rights requirement.
