Statement of the Socialist International on the Situation in Goma, DRC
27 January 2025
The Socialist International expresses its deep concern over the escalation of violence in Goma and its surrounding areas in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
As stated by the UN Secretary-General, we urge Rwandan forces to withdraw from the DRC and to cease all forms of support for M23 fighters. The recent offensive by M23 has caused immense suffering and displaced more than one million people.
Every effort must be made to achieve an immediate ceasefire and to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC.
Furthermore, we highlight the urgent need for humanitarian aid to support the affected populations.
In these challenging circumstances, the Socialist International expresses its support for President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo and the Congolese authorities in their efforts to restore peace.
The Socialist International reaffirms its solidarity with the people of the DRC and calls on the international community to act swiftly to end this war, which risks further destabilising the country and the entire region.
The Socialist International encourages Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to prioritise dialogue as the means to resolve all disputes between them.
