Statement on the assassination of Roberto Samcam Ruiz

The Socialist International strongly denounces the assassination of Roberto Samcam Ruiz, a well-known figure of the Nicaraguan opposition. The assassination took place on 19 June at his home in San José, Costa Rica, where he lived in exile. The retired major, a strong voice against the dictatorial regime in Nicaragua, was denationalised on 11 July 2023 and obtained Spanish nationality a few days later.
This is not the first time that opponents of the Nicaraguan regime living in Costa Rica have been targeted. Therefore, we call on the authorities:

To find and bring to justice the perpetrators of the assassination of Roberto Samcam Ruiz.

To guarantee the security of Nicaraguan opposition figures residing in Costa Rica.
