Statement on the Political Situation in Niger

The Socialist International (SI) welcomes the recent release of most of the individuals arrested and imprisoned following the coup d'état of July 26, 2023, among them comrade Foumakoye Gado, former President of the PNDS, a member party of the SI.
The SI hopes that those still being held for the same reasons, including President Bazoum and his wife, will be released without delay.
The SI regrets the recent dissolution of Nigerien political parties, which it views as a violation of the right to association and a serious setback for democracy.
The Socialist International urges the Nigerien authorities to reinstate the political parties and to accelerate the process of returning to democratic order in Niger.
