Statement on the polticial situation in Guinea-Bissau

The Socialist International notes with grave concern the current political situation in Guinea-Bissau recognizing its potential to disrupt the political stability of the country. We express our support for the democratic constitutional order of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau and strongly reject any possible attempt to disrupt this democratic order.
We emphasize that there can never be justifiable reasons for the breakdown of democracy and constitutional rule.
We support the path towards building a democratic and free society that began in 1974, and despite the attempts and coups that Guinea-Bissau has suffered, it is governed by the rule of law.
The Socialist International calls on all political and social actors in Guinea-Bissau to respect, protect, and guarantee constitutional principles and values and pursue a peaceful resolution to safeguard stability in the country.
We further call on the international bodies including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) to take steps to speedily and peacefully resolve the political impasse.
