Togo: SI appeals for process of democratic transition to be restored

14 February 2005

The Socialist International deems unacceptable the violation and revision of the Togolese Constitution in the process of succession, following the death of Eyadéma Gnassingbé, leading to the assumption of power by Faure Gnassingbé and expresses its deepest concern at the deteriorating security situation there.

The Socialist International fully supports the efforts of the regional bodies, the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, to find an early and peaceful solution to Togo's current crisis and expresses its solidarity with opposition parties, including SI-member the Democratic Convention of African Peoples, CDPA, who wish to demonstrate peacefully without fear of repression and loss of human life.

The International calls on the authorities to revert to the previous constitution and to respect its provisions for a democratic transition of power to a newly elected president.
