On the 20th of this month of November, presidential, legislative and municipal elections were held in Equatorial Guinea. These elections were characterized, as is usual in that country, by the serious irregularities registered, and in the service of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mhasogo, who has been ruling the country for 43 years, to proclaim himself the winner with 98 percent of the votes for a new term of seven more years.
The Convergence for Social Democracy party (CPDS), a member of the Socialist International, which participated in these elections with its General Secretary, Andrés Esono Ondo, as a candidate for President of the Republic, denounced numerous irregularities such as the delegated, multiple and public votes in the vast majority of polling stations, the expulsion of their representatives from the polling stations and the seizure of ballot boxes and tally sheets.
The Congress of the Socialist International, meeting in Madrid on November 25, 26 and 27, condemns the blatant electoral fraud perpetrated in Equatorial Guinea to perpetuate Teodoro Obiang in power and establish a dynasty in the country with the announced transfer of power to his son.
The Socialist International supports the CPDS party and its candidate, condemns the registered electoral fraud and urges the international community, especially the governments of democratic countries, to undertake the necessary pressure to promote the process of transition towards democracy in Equatorial Guinea.
