Socialist International reiterates it’s support and encouragement to the efforts for a settlement of the longstanding Cyprus conflict, according to the UN Security Council resolutions.
Observing with concern the escalation of conflict in the Middle East and the Black Sea region, creating unprecedented security challenges, Socialist International stresses the importance of progress in dealing with the Cyprus problem. In this context, we welcome the UN Secretary- General’s initiatives for resuming negotiations between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. If the parties decide to resume them, the negotiations should be phased, meaningful, and result-oriented, with an agreed time frame and an established mechanism for addressing potential deadlocks.
The opening of more checkpoints in particular in Nicosia would be a positive step for creating a positive atmosphere in view of resuming the talks for a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem.
