Declaration on Western Sahara
Meeting of the SI Council at the United Nations in Geneva, 1-2 July 2016
The Council of Socialist International pays tribute to Mohamed Abdelaziz, Secretary General of Polisario Front, and an African leader who dedicated his life to achieving peace, justice, democracy, freedom and self-determination in Western Sahara and in the region, the same values for which the International Socialist always advocates.
The Council requests that the MINURSO should be fully restored in order to be able to continue its mission for a peaceful and lasting solution in Western Sahara, as requested by the Security Council and relevant UN resolutions.
The Council of the SI asks the UN Secretary General and his Special Envoy to continue their efforts aiming to achieve a mutually acceptable solution which provides self-determination for the Saharawi people. In this regard the SI Council requests the Kingdom of Morocco and Polisario Front to engage in direct and serious negotiations under the auspices of the UN.
