Statement of the Socialist International on the situation in Venezuela
3 January 2026
The Socialist International in close contact with its member parties is closely monitoring the developments currently unfolding in Venezuela.
As we have highlighted recently taking into account the serious escalation of tensions, the Socialist International issues a strong call for de-escalation, restraint, and strict respect for international law and the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
The Socialist International reiterates that the only sustainable way out of the Venezuelan crisis lies in a democratic, negotiated and peaceful solution, based on the will of the Venezuelan people and full respect for human rights.
Non-respect for international law and the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations can create a dangerous precedent for global and regional security.
In this context, it recalls that the international community, by and large, did not recognize the results of the elections held on 28 July 2024, as announced by the National Electoral Council controlled by the government of Nicolás Maduro.
The Socialist International reaffirms its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, particularly with those who have been forced to leave their country for political reasons, and reiterates its readiness to contribute, together with international and regional actors, to efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful and lasting resolution of the current crisis.
