The Socialist International expresses its concern over recent announcements and constitutional changes that further restrict political pluralism and the exercise of democratic rights in Nicaragua, including the declaration by President Daniel Ortega that no further elections will be held.

The SI calls on the Nicaraguan authorities to respect fundamental freedoms, release all persons detained for political reasons, and guarantee the rights of political parties, civil society, independent media and human rights defenders.

A peaceful and inclusive dialogue, together with a transparent electoral process allowing the full participation of all political forces, remains essential to addressing the current situation.

The Socialist International reiterates its solidarity with the people of Nicaragua and its support for a democratic and peaceful solution based on respect for human rights and the rule of law.
