Statement on Lebanon: The abolition of the death penalty in Lebanon, a historic decision for the Arab world

17 August 2026

The Socialist International congratulates the Lebanese Parliament on its historic decision to abolish the death penalty.

Lebanon is the first Arab country to adopt such a law. It is important that it has retroactive application, taking into account the moratorium in place since 2004.

The Socialist International, as set out in its Ethical Charter, has always been at the forefront of global campaigns against capital punishment, considering that it represents a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We urge our member parties to support all efforts in this direction, in the hope that more countries among the 55 that retain capital punishment will follow the example of Lebanon.
