Statement on the developments in Syria
25 January 2026
The Socialist International expresses its great concern on recent developments in Syria. The fighting between the Syrian army, jihadist groups and the Syrian Democratic Forces is not only threatening the regional stability but also seriously worsens the already problematic humanitarian situation.
One year after the fall of the Assad regime, as Syria tries to emerge from years of conflict and authoritarian rule, the transition is very fragile.
Although three million refugees and internally displaced people have returned home, the ISIL/Daesh terrorist group still remains a threat, and the presence of foreign fighters and unsecured detention facilities create important challenges. To move forward, it’s crucial to resolve in a consensual way the problems leading to sectarian and ethnic tensions.
In this context, the deterioration of the situation in north and northeastern Syria in the recent weeks needs to be urgently addressed. More than 130.000 people have been displaced from areas including Sheikh Maqsud, Ashrafiyeh, Raqqa and Tabqa.
The siege of the city of Kobani resulted in the total cessation of water, electricity, internet and communication services, isolating an estimated number of 150.000 civilians during freezing winter conditions.
Therefore, as highlighted by the deputy spokesperson of the UN, the access of humanitarian aid should be immediately facilitated, by opening the access routes to Kobani. The city of Kobani is symbolically associated with the fight against the Islamic State as it was the scene of a pivotal battle.
A sustainable cease fire and the implementation of the agreement reached through the mediation of the United States and other partners between the Syrian government and the SDF, should be applied without further delay. The recent government decree recognizing the linguistic, cultural and citizenship rights of Syrian Kurds is an encouraging step for the future.
Inclusive policies at all levels, regarding cultural and religious rights, as well as the respect of women rights are important components of a Syrian led and Syrian owned political process that will create the foundations of a stable and working democracy.
