Statement on the Belarusian Freedom Day
25 March 2026
The Socialist International marks 25 March as both Belarus Freedom Day and the International Day of Solidarity with Belarus, commemorating the historic declaration of independence made 108 years ago. This anniversary stands as a powerful reminder of the Belarusian people’s enduring aspiration for freedom, democracy, and national dignity.
Across Europe, North America, and beyond, more than 67 events are being held to express solidarity with Belarus. These include marches in Warsaw and Vilnius, as well as the “Path to Freedom” conference in Kyiv, bringing together voices committed to democratic change. In many cities, public buildings are being illuminated, and the historic white-red-white flag is being displayed as a symbol of unity with the Belarusian people.
At the same time, we note with deep concern the continued repression inside Belarus, including reported restrictions on access to information and threats of criminal prosecution against citizens participating in solidarity actions abroad, as well as intimidation directed at their families. Such actions further underline the urgent need for international attention and support.
The Socialist International reaffirms its unwavering solidarity with its member party, the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada), and with all democratic forces in Belarus striving for fundamental rights, the rule of law, and free and fair elections.
On this day of commemoration and mobilisation, we call on the international community, parliaments, and civil society to continue raising their voices in support of Belarus. The struggle for democracy in Belarus is a shared responsibility, and the Socialist International stands firmly alongside those working peacefully for a free and democratic future.
