Statement on the General and Presidential Elections in Brazil

The Socialist International sends a warm message of solidarity to the Brazilian people ahead of this Sunday’s crucial general and presidential elections, which will determine the future of the country for years to come. In a political landscape where the extreme right uses every possible means to prevail and to implement policies against gender equality, climate protection, and social and human rights, it is crucial that all democratic and progressive voters mobilise to support Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s candidacy for President.
We also wish great success to the candidates of our member party, the Democratic Labour Party (PDT). The PDT has decided to include a large number of Indigenous people on its lists, demonstrating its commitment to an inclusive society with equality of opportunity.
May this election be a celebration of democracy, with an outcome that sends a strong and optimistic message to the whole region and the world.
