Statement on the Second Round of the Presidential Election in Brazil

23 October 2026

On Sunday 25 October, the people of Brazil will return to the polls to elect their President in a second round that will shape the future of the country, and of the whole region, for years to come.

The Socialist International reiterates its warm solidarity with the Brazilian people and its full support for the candidacy of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Lula’s governments have lifted millions of Brazilians out of poverty and have placed the reduction of inequality, the protection of the Amazon and the strengthening of democratic institutions at the heart of their agenda.

This second round is a choice between a Brazil that defends its democracy, social rights and the climate, and a return to the politics of division that led to the attack on the country’s democratic institutions on 8 January 2023.

We call on all democratic and progressive voters to mobilise on Sunday and to vote for Lula, for a Brazil of democracy, equality and hope.

We wish the Brazilian people a peaceful and transparent election day, and we trust that the will of the people, expressed at the ballot box, will be respected by all.
