Statement on the Sentencing of Temirlan Sultanbekov and Kadyrbek Atambayev in Kyrgyzstan

8 October 2026

The Socialist International strongly condemns the sentences handed down today by the Pervomaisky District Court in Bishkek against Temirlan Sultanbekov, Leader of the Social Democrats of Kyrgyzstan and Vice-President of the Socialist International, and Kadyrbek Atambayev. Temirlan Sultanbekov has been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment. That term combines four years in this case with a sentence imposed in an earlier case. Kadyrbek Atambayev has been sentenced to four years. Both sentences include confiscation of property.

The defendants have firmly denied the charges, which allege preparation for mass unrest and a forcible seizure of power following the parliamentary elections of November 2025. The trial was held behind closed doors, despite repeated requests from the defence for public hearings, denying the accused the transparency and independent scrutiny that are fundamental to a fair trial. These proceedings bear all the hallmarks of a politically motivated prosecution intended to silence one of the few organised opposition forces remaining in the country, only months before the presidential election of January 2027.

The Socialist International stands in full solidarity with Temirlan Sultanbekov, Kadyrbek Atambayev, their families and all members of the Social Democrats, and supports them as they pursue their appeal before the Bishkek City Court. We call on the authorities of Kyrgyzstan to ensure that the appeal is heard in public and in full accordance with international standards of due process, and to release all those imprisoned for their political activity.

Our International will continue to follow this case closely and to raise it with partners and international institutions. Democracy cannot flourish where political opponents are imprisoned and the voices of citizens are silenced.
