Africa Committee 2025, Online

21st November 2025

The Africa Committee of the Socialist International met on 21 November 2025 to review the political situation in several African countries, discuss organisational matters, and plan upcoming activities. Representatives presented detailed updates on national political contexts, highlighting challenges such as post-electoral tensions, democratic backsliding, economic pressures, and internal party reforms. The Committee also examined preparations for an ad hoc meeting in Addis Ababa in February 2026, centred on the African Union’s Agenda 2063, as well as plans to celebrate 50 years of the SI’s presence in Africa, to be hosted by Senegal. Additional discussions concerned the financial status of member parties, with several in arrears, and the evaluation of new membership applications, prompting calls for clearer procedures and greater involvement of the Africa Committee.

The meeting concluded with the formation of a drafting group to prepare a concise declaration reflecting the Committee’s discussions, to be finalised by the following Tuesday. A series of follow-up actions were assigned, including outreach to parties behind in dues, preparation of terms of reference for the anniversary celebration, and coordination among committee members on documentation and review processes. Overall, the session underscored both the political challenges facing member parties across the continent and the organisational priorities required to strengthen the Socialist International’s engagement in Africa.
