The Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean Santiago de Chile

The SI Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean held a meeting on 15-16 of May 2026 in Santiago de Chile chaired by the Committee Chair Miguel Vargas  and hosted by the Socialist Party of Chile .

The Meeting opened with introductory remarks by Paulina Vodanovic President of the Socialist Party of Chile and Miguel Vargas Chair of the SI Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean followed by a speech from Chantal Kambiwa , SI General Coordinator.

Working sessions started with a debate on how Latin America and the   Caribbean are affected by the reconfiguration of the global order.

This topic was tackled in depth  and linked with the need of strategic autonomy of Latin America and the Caribbean in front  of the big powers competition .

Then political leaders from the region and party representatives 
discussed on the need to strengthen democratic representation and social cohesion to address polarization and the rise of extreme right in the region.

An interesting exchange of views followed presentations on the necessary self criticism of the left in order to make a winning proposal for the future of Latin America and the Caribbean .

These rich debates concluded with the adoption of the Declaration of Santiago de Chile .
