Gender Equality Committee

Partit Laburista, Valetta.  Malta

On 27 November 2025, the Socialist International formally launched its Committee for Gender Equality at the headquarters of the Labour Party (Partit Laburista), in a ceremony led by Chantal Kambiwa, the General Coordinator of the Socialist International, and Janet Camilo, President of Socialist International Women. This launch marked a renewed commitment by the organisation to integrate gender equality across its global agenda, strengthening organisational focus on women’s rights, equitable political participation, and gender-responsive policy work within its membership and partner parties worldwide.

The initiative reflects the Socialist International’s broader strategic priorities of democracy, equality, and social justice, which have been emphasised in its leadership and institutional activities throughout 2025. The creation and formal launch of this Committee for Gender Equality builds on groundwork reported earlier in the year, where Chantal Kambiwa presented the composition of the Equality Committee during the Socialist International Council meeting in Istanbul, signalling institutional steps toward institutionalising gender equality work within the organisation’s structure.

By establishing this Committee, the Socialist International aims to strengthen internal coordination on gender issues, support member parties in adopting gender-equitable practices, and elevate gender equality as a core component of social democratic politics globally. While the event itself has not yet been covered widely in mainstream news outlets, it aligns with the Socialist International’s ongoing focus on equality and inclusion within its statutory bodies and meetings.
