Socialist International reaffirms its support for the comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue on equal political footing and condemns all efforts by external powers to militarise or escalate tensions on the island.
We call on both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders to urgently resume UN-led negotiations, aimed at achieving a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality.
We express deep concern that the peace process has remained at a standstill since 2017, and we firmly believe that Cyprus must become a model of peace, cooperation, and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean.
In this spirit, we also emphasize and reiterate the importance of additional crossings within the framework of Confidence Building Measures. Furthermore, interests and rights of Turkish Cypriot Community must be honoured within the Schengen membership process.
We stress the need to respect the citizenship rights of children of mixed marriages living in Cyprus and to ensure that they are freed of all forms of discrimination.
