Resolution on Cyprus
Socialist International has been positively encouraged after the election of a new Turkish Cypriot
leader who advocates solution of the Cyprus problem in line with the UN Security Council resolutions and years of convergences between the sides.
Socialist International reaffirms its support for the comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus on a bicommunal, bizonal federal model based on equality as stipulated by the relevant UN resolutions. We condemn all efforts that would militarize or escalate tensions on the island. It is clear that a Cyprus settlement will contribute to a better cooperation, welfare and stability particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
We express deep concern that the peace process has remained at a standstill since 2017, and we firmly believe that a structured solution process must resume in a good faith and in a result-oriented manner. We call on the Cypriot leaders to commit themselves to carry out negotiations based on empathy, inclusion and mutual understanding. Peace must start within the island and Cypriot leaders must seize the opportunity to talk to each other in good spirit and with mutual respect and avoid actions that would jeopardize the dialogue.
In this spirit, we also emphasize and reiterate the importance of additional crossings across the divide and within the framework of Confidence Building Measures. Furthermore, we call on the European Union to protect the interests and rights of both communities within the Schengen membership process. We stress the need to respect the citizenship rights of children of mixed marriages living in Cyprus and to ensure that they are freed of all forms of discrimination.
