RESOLUTION ON THE SITUATION IN JAMAICA FOLLOWING HURRICANE MELISSA
The Council of the Socialist International expresses its solidarity with the people of Jamaica in the face of the human, economic and social consequences left by Hurricane Melissa after its passage over the island.
It recognizes that extreme climate events affect Caribbean nations with particular severity, reaffirming the urgent need for decisive and sustained international action.
It values the commitment and dedication shown by the comrades of the People’s National Party (PNP) — an active member of our International — in their immediate work assisting affected communities, which reaffirms the principles of solidarity, social justice and shared responsibility that guide our global political family.
RESOLVES:
- To express its firm solidarity with the people of Jamaica and with the comrades of the People’s National Party, who are facing the devastating effects of Hurricane Melissa with determination and a spirit of service.
- To convey its condolences to the families who have suffered irreparable losses, as well as its recognition of those working on the front line of emergency response, including public institutions, social organizations and community actors.
- To call on the international community and multilateral organizations to mobilize financial, technical and humanitarian assistance immediately, in order to support the reconstruction of the country and strengthen its resilience to future extreme events.
- To underscore global responsibility in the face of climate change, recalling that its unequal impact requires fairer, more solidary and more accessible cooperation mechanisms for small island developing States.
- To reiterate the commitment of the Socialist International to accompany the People’s National Party and the Jamaican people in this recovery process, promoting regional cooperation and the defense of a progressive agenda centered on human dignity.
- To order that this resolution be officially communicated to the Government of Jamaica, the People’s National Party, the member parties of the Socialist International and the relevant multilateral organizations.
