Declaration on Niger

Meeting of the SI Council at the United Nations in Geneva, 1-2 July 2016

Original: French

The Council of the Socialist International:

Condemns the deadly attacks perpetrated for several months by the terrorist group Boko Haram in the Lake Chad Basin and the extreme east of Niger and reaffirms its total support to this country, in the efforts deployed by the government of President Mahamadou Issoufou to ensure peace and security in his country, defend his territory from terrorist attacks, deepen democracy and guarantee development.

Highlights its concern in relation to the thousands of refugees fleeing the conflicts in Mali and Nigeria and the economic migrants who use Niger as a transit country towards North Africa and Europe, and commits to increasing the mobilisation of the international community to reinforce in both cases urgent humanitarian assistance and halt the refugee crisis.
