Meeting of the SI Council in Madrid 2024

24-25 February 2024

Summary of the World Council of the Socialist International
Madrid, February 24 and 25, 2024
"The Socialism That Wins"

The World Council of the Socialist International, held on February 24 and 25 in Madrid, was inaugurated by the organization’s Vice-President, Isabel Allende, who expressed the Chilean people’s gratitude for the international solidarity received during the dictatorship that followed the coup in Chile and the tragic death of President Salvador Allende, marking its 50th anniversary.

In her speech, Isabel Allende emphasized that "the world is in a state of chaos that demands the Socialist International reclaim its leadership to play a fundamental role in strengthening democracy." She also thanked the organization’s President, Pedro Sánchez, for taking the reins of the Socialist International, highlighting that he is providing "the momentum it needs." The Vice-President stressed the need for the organization to regain its global presence and leadership, stating that "we need to renew our project to strengthen democracies and support electoral processes with guarantees."

Following this, the President of the Socialist International and Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, delivered the opening address. In his speech, Sánchez emphasized that "democratic socialism is the only viable model for social progress." He also underlined the principle of fraternity, which he defined as one of the organization’s fundamental values: "Everything that happens in the world affects us all. Fraternity is essential for progressivism to counteract the ultra-right positions of the reactionary international."

Based on this foundation, Sánchez reaffirmed the commitment of progressive parties to a just peace in Ukraine and the Middle East and stressed that "we socialists face the challenge of adapting our values to the 21st century, convinced that it is possible to combine economic growth with social progress."

Main Topics of Debate
Under the theme "The Socialism That Wins," the World Council focused its discussions on three major current issues:

  1. Reforming global governance to achieve sustainable development for all.
  2. Addressing the challenges of our time to build a fair and inclusive world: gender equality, green transition, and digital transformation.
  3. Promoting international peace and security.

The World Council in Madrid was established as a key space to redefine the progressive agenda on a global scale, with the goal of strengthening democracies and socialist values at a critical moment for humanity.
