The Socialist International (SI) expresses its deep concern regarding the recent political and social events in Colombia, which reveal increasing difficulties in institutional understanding among the Congress of the Republic, the high courts of justice, and the executive branch.
We call for respect for the decisions made by the judges of the Republic and the legislative power within the institutional, democratic, and constitutional framework. The fundamental principle of the inviolability of parliamentary votes must not be undermined or persecuted through acts of violence and coercion, which endanger the independence and autonomy of the branches of power, as well as the lives and integrity of legislators and justice administrators.
From all legitimate and institutional representatives of public power in Colombia, we expect strict respect for the Constitutional and legal order, as well as their willingness to keep open the channels of institutional and democratic resolution for conflicts arising among the different branches of power. The only path forward is democracy and the unconditional respect for institutions.
Finally, we trust that the people of Colombia will achieve the peaceful and harmonious coexistence they long for and that all social democrats around the world hope for.
